How to Develop a Comprehensive Independent Living Skills Plan

Many older teenagers remain under the care of a foster parent. The foster parents' obligation to care for the teen approaching young adulthood is nearing an end yet the adolescent is not fully ready for the plunge into adulthood and all its responsibilities. In transition, many seek help through an Independent Living Skills Plan provided by community groups and social services.

Create a life vision statement. This sentence summarizes the purpose of a person's life. It can tell how to best function within one's strengths and talents. This allows a person to use his ability to benefit himself and society. All other goals must fit under this one vision statement. Write the vision statement on the top of each daily planning sheet.

Set a major life goal for each of the areas of your life. Make an intellectual goal for lifelong learning. The next step may be college or a technical school. Set physical goals to control diet, weight and fitness, such as joining a gym or using forgotten sports equipment. Social goals could inspire you to join a youth group at a local church, or a sorority or fraternity at college.

Use a personal diary to evaluate your progress in each area of growth and seek help in overcoming obstacles in achieving your goals. Celebrate achievements with friends and family, such as getting your first apartment, admission to college or first job. Make these moments into memories of the milestones you cross on your journey to independent adulthood.
