Peroxide Treatment for Ear Infection

Hydrogen peroxide, found in any drug store, is an antiseptic agent that is odorless and colorless. When applied to a wound, hydrogen peroxide causes an effervescence that removes debris. It can treat an ear infection by loosening earwax accumulation.
  1. Features

    • Some signs of an ear infection can be vertigo, nausea, redness, pain and pressure.

    Warning

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, drops such as hydrogen peroxide should not go in an ear if it has a tube or a hole in it.

    Ear Wax

    • Use a clean eyedropper to apply a few drops of peroxide to the infected ear twice a day and let remain for five minutes. Remove excess liquid with a Q-tip or cotton swab. Do not apply drops for more than four to five days.

    Damage

    • Never attempt to dig out earwax with a hairpin, paper clip or even a cotton swab. This will only push wax further into the ear canal and can cause damage to the eardrum. The irrigation procedure may take several attempts before the excess wax falls out. If symptoms don't improve, seek medical consultation.

    Activities to Avoid

    • Avoid swimming and high altitude areas while you have an ear infection. Also avoid smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages.
