Triggers of Meniere's Syndrome
-
Salt
-
Most doctors agree that symptoms of Meniere's are caused by excess fluid in the inner ear (endolymphatic hydrops). High salt intake is a strong contributor to the excess fluid.
Other Dietary
-
Problems with inner ear circulation can also trigger Meniere's. Overindulgence in caffeine, alcohol, sugar and fat may create circulation issues. Smoking is also not recommended for the same reason.
Allergies
-
Often, a Meniere's sufferer will feel that his symptoms are triggered by allergies, especially seasonal allergies like hay fever.
Herpes Simplex Virus
-
Though controversial, some researchers theorize that the herpes simplex virus (HSV) can embed itself in the inner ear nerves. If so, episodic flareups of HSV may trigger Meniere's symptoms.
Stress
-
The role stress plays in triggering Meniere's is unknown, but many patients feel that high stress will cause symptoms.
Barometric Pressure
-
Many Meniere's sufferers report that changes in barometric pressure will cause symptoms. Like most suspected triggers, it is unproven in a clinical setting.
