1
See your doctor. You need to visit your doctor to diagnose the cause of your earache. He will look into your ear with an otoscope, an instrument used to view the inside of the ear canal, to determine if your ear is inflamed or filled with fluid. Your doctor might send you to an ear, nose and throat specialist for further evaluation.

2
Take antibiotics, if prescribed. If your earache is caused by a bacterial infection, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics. If your earache is a result of a viral infection, your doctor will not give your antibiotics because they are ineffective for viruses. Take all the prescribed medication to make sure your infection has been totally eradicated.

3
Use a decongestant. Ask your doctor about taking an over-the-counter oral decongestant to relieve pressure in your ears and sinuses and ease your earache. Decongestants can cause side effects such as fast heart rate or insomnia. If you experience side effects, stop taking the medication and tell your doctor.

4
Inquire about ear drops. Over-the-counter ear drops might be soothing for your earache. If your pain is severe, your doctor might order prescription ear drops to alleviate the pain.
-
5
Apply a heating pad to reduce the pain of your earache. Gently place it on your ear on the medium setting. Do not fall asleep with the heating pad on, or you risk burning yourself.
