How to Melt Ear Wax

Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance in the ear, produced by the body to protect the middle and inner ear from water damage, dirt and other infections. Ear wax should harden and fall out of the ear on its own. However, if you're experiencing excessive ear wax buildup, there is a treatment that you can perform at home to melt (or, more accurately, soften) the ear wax and remove it from your ear.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect a small amount of baby oil or mineral oil into an eye dropper or baby's medicine dropper.

    • 2

Tilt your head to the side so that the ear with the ear wax buildup is facing the ceiling.

    • 3

Squeeze a few drops of the oil into your ear. Repeat this process once in the morning and once at night for two or three days. The oil will soften the wax in your ear.

    • 4

Warm some water in the microwave or on the stove. Do not make the water hot---it should simply be warm to the touch.

    • 5

Tilt your head to the side so that the infected ear is again facing the ceiling; squeeze a few drops of the warm water into your ear.

    • 6

Lightly tug on the tip of your ear. This will straighten your ear canal to allow the water to fully enter your ear.

    • 7

Tilt your head to the opposite side so that the infected ear is now facing the ground. Allow your ear to drain like this for several minutes. The ear wax should drain out with the water.
