What Are Some Common Ear Problems?
Ear problems are very common in people of all ages. Ear problems can result from colds, allergies, injuries or swimming and can sometimes lead to more painful complications if not taken care of properly.-
Infections
-
Ear infections strike when bacteria or viruses cause fluid buildup behind the ear drum, usually caused by a cold or allergies. Pressurized pus in the middle ear can also cause earaches, swelling or redness, leading to infection.
Ear Wax
-
Ear wax is normal as it protects and moisturizes the skin of the outer ear canal and catches dirt before it has a chance to enter the ear drum. Excessive ear wax buildup, however, needs to be removed occasionally, preferably with the twisted corner of a moist washcloth.
Swimmer's Ear
-
Swimmer's ear is caused when water pools in the ear canal and can't find it's way out without medication. This condition can also happen when someone cleans the ears too frequently with cotton swabs.
Tinnitus
-
Tinnitus is an occasional or ongoing low- or high-pitched ringing or roaring sound inside one or both ears. Excessive wax, allergies, infections, circulatory problems, or long-term exposure to loud noise could be the main culprits.
Inner Ear Problems
-
Inner ear problems or disequilibrium can cause dizziness, vertigo or even a condition called Meniere's disease. Meniere's disease can also result in hearing loss.
