Why Are Ears Sensitive?

Many people complain of having dry, itchy ears. Ears are a delicate feature of the body, and there can be a number of causes for ears to be sensitive.
  1. Causes

    • For most part of it, ears react to disturbance in the external auditory canal skin. The canal skin is highly sensitive and the accumulation of the slightest debris such as a dead hair can give rise to itching sensation in your ears.

    Sensitivity to Dry Ears

    • Human ear has a thin, natural layer of body oil. At times, the ear does not formulate any ear wax, resulting in a dry and itchy canal skin. Some people dry their ears out in an attempt at cleaning them. Dry ears are prone to accumulation of dead skin.

For someone who lacks natural ear wax, a few drops of vegetable oil should help. If you want to have your ears cleaned, you should have your doctor perform this procedure every 6-8 months. Avoid the use of cotton swabs.

    Sensitivity to Hearing Aids

    • The plastic of hearing aids is also known to cause allergic reaction in some ears. The hearing aid can also trap any water that gets into the ear, causing irritation in the user's ear. It is advised to keep your external ear free of water. It is also possible that the hearing aid is applying undue pressure on the walls of the canal, causing pain, itching and irritation. The best solution then is to switch to another hearing aid.

    Sensitivity to Skin problems

    • A number of skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, allergic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis are also known to cause itching in the human ear. Otoscopy (studying the inner ear) is used to diagnose these conditions. Steroid creams are used to treat skin diseases affecting the human ear.

    Sensitivity to Psychological disturbances

    • The ears are also sensitive to psychological disturbances. Some people get nervous and start scratching their ears. This is usually a normal sensation to which a person reacts hyperactively.

    Treatment

    • Other than the specific treatments that are already listed above, the general principle is to keep your ears dry and avoid aggressive cleaning. A few drops of olive oil prevent the ears from drying out and protect them from water as well.
