Heat for Ear Infection
"Middle ear infections, also known as otitis media, are among the most common illnesses of early childhood," according to the Mayo Clinic. Ear infections can be treated with prescription drugs or natural remedies. One way to naturally sooth the pain from an ear infection is with heat.-
Facts
-
An ear infection is typically the result of bacteria that has developed from the common cold. It can also be caused by abnormally small ducts in the inner ear which causes congestion, leading to infection.
Effects
-
Using heat with an ear infection helps to encourage blood blow and loosen any thick mucus or pus build-up in the ear. This causes more effective drainage which will help the body fight off the infection.
Method
-
Using a hot water bottle or a heating pad, apply heat for 10 minutes. Remove the heat for 15 to 20 minutes and then reapply until the pain is relieved.
Considerations
-
If an individual has been diagnosed with an ear infection, he or she should take antibiotics in conjunction with applying heat. Without the use of antibiotics the heat can actually help encourage the spread of the infection.
Warning
-
Using a heating element that is too hot may burn the skin. Use a dish rag or towel to deaden the intensity of the heat. If the symptoms of the ear infection persist or worsen for more than 7 days, see a doctor.
