Symptoms of Minears Disease

Meniere's disease was named after French physician Prosper Meniere in 1861. It is a disease of the inner ear that commonly causes hearing loss. Meniere's disease can cause several moderate to severe symptoms.

Symptoms

• Symptoms of Meniere's disease include tinnitus (ringing in the ear), vertigo (severe dizziness), fluctuating loss of hearing and the feeling of pressure or pain in the affected ear.

Cause

• Although Meniere's disease is known to occur when part of the ear canal becomes swollen, the exact cause is unknown.

Diagnosis

• Diagnosing Meniere's disease can include hearing tests, blood tests and an magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the head. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders confirms that 45,000 new cases of Meniere's disease are diagnosed each year.

Treatment

• Although there is no known cure for Meniere's disease, medications can be used to relieve symptoms and reduce pressure in the inner ear.

Risks

• In Meniere's disease, risk factors can include smoking, respiratory infection, stress, alcohol use, allergies, recent viral illness or the use of certain medications.
