How Long Do Symptoms of ETD Last After Sinusitis?

Many people experience the symptoms of eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) following a sinus infection or as a result of chronic sinusitis.
  1. Time Frame

    • This condition can last from a few days to years (Rod Moser PA, 2009).

    Treatment

    • The first line of treatment is to get the sufferer's ears to gently pop, thus opening the tube and relieving the pressure. If this does not work, other treatments include nasal irrigation, antihistamine, nasal decongestant, steroid, or surgery (SinusInfectionHelp.com, 2009).

    Prevention/Solution

    • It is best to avoid high air pressure situations while suffering from sinusitis--these could assist in bringing on or worsening the symptoms of ETD.

    Effects

    • The effects of ETD are varied and may include hearing loss, tinnitus, pain, vertigo and infection. (Clinical Advisor, 2009)

    When to Seek Help

    • Most people will have one or more episodes of ETD in their lifetimes. Usually these episodes last no more than a week or so. After an infection, the condition can last a few months. In someone with chronic sinusitis, the condition can last years. If the symptoms of ETD last longer than six months, a specialist may be able to offer some relief.
