How to Dry Up Water in the Ears

During bathing and swimming, water can enter the ear through the ear canal. If this water becomes trapped it may interfere with hearing or cause irritation and discomfort. Water retention in the ear also increases your risk of developing swimmer's ear, an infection in the ear canal that requires treatment with antibiotics. Here are ways to dry up water in the ears before it becomes a real problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Tilt your head to the side after bathing and swimming to let water drain naturally. Bouncing on one leg while tilting your head may also help.

    • 2

Use a blow dryer on the lowest setting to dry water in the ears. The hair dryer should remain at least one foot from the ear during drying.

    • 3

Mix a solution of equal parts rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. Apply a few drops of the mixture to the affected ear to help dry up water. The alcohol will speed evaporation of the water, and the vinegar will help kill any bacteria inside your ear to prevent infection.

    • 4

Use an over-the-counter acetic acid ear drop to help dry up water. These medicated drops are available at most grocery stores and pharmacies.

    • 5

Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ears to dry up water. Inserting objects into your ears can result in damage to your eardrum and increase the risk of infection.

    • 6

Call your doctor if home treatments fail or if you notice an increase in discomfort, redness, swelling, or discharge from your ear. These symptoms may indicate an infection that requires medical treatment.
