Pain Relievers

The first step in treating an ear infection is to take care of the pain. Parents have two main choices. First, they can give their child an ibuprofen product every six to eight hours. Some ibuprofen products include Advil and Motrin. Second, they can administer acetaminophen once every four hours. Acetaminophen is the ingredient found in Tylenol. The particular dosage can be found on the product label or by calling your pediatrician. It is determined by the age and weight of the child.
Adults suffering from an ear infection can take two acetaminophen tablets every four hours, or one ibuprofen tablet every six to eight hours.
Treatment at Home

Parents can use some herbal remedies to treat any ear infection that has occurred within their home. First, they can take a small baby food jar and clean it out. Then place 1 tbsp. of warm olive oil in the jar. Add eight drops of tea tree oil and mix together. Place two drops of this mixture into any infected ears twice per day. Do this for at least 10 days. Tree tea oil naturally fights bacteria, viruses, and even fungus. So whatever the cause of your infection, it has the ability to get rid of it. Second, you can purchase Colloidal Silver in liquid form and use it as ear drops. Just place one drop of Colloidal Silver in the infected ear twice each day. Do this for 10 days. Colloidal Silver works as a natural antibiotic to kill the infection.
Treatment by a Physician

It is recommended that you see a doctor to determine the extent of the ear infection. It is best not to take a chance at suffering permanent hearing loss. Most likely, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic. Antibiotics work to kill any present bacteria and dry up any excess fluid. The antibiotic needs to be taken until it is gone. If it is stopped too early, the infection will return and you will have to start treatment all over again. If you or your child suffer from chronic ear infections, your doctor will set you up for surgery to place tubes in your ears. The tubes allow the fluid to drain out while equalizing the pressure inside of and outside of the ear. The surgery is done as an outpatient and only takes about 20 minutes. The tubes will fall out on their own between six months to three years after they have been placed.
