How to Relieve Earache Pain

Ear infections cause earache pain. You may also experience a fever, dizziness, temporary hearing loss and the sensation that something is blocking the ear. Children with earaches may be more irritable, cry often, have trouble sleeping, have headaches, pull at their ears and have a fever. You may also notice a clear fluid coming from a child's ears. Usually, ear infections clear up on their own within two or three days. However, if you notice blood or pus coming from the ear, this may indicate a ruptured eardrum and you will need to go to the doctor.

Instructions

    • 1

Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Follow the directions on the label and do not use more than is indicated.

    • 2

Make a compress by heating water and soaking a towel in it. When warm, squeeze the excess water from the towel and place on the ear that hurts. This can help reduce the inflammation.

    • 3

Chew gum to relieve the pressure in the infected ear. This can help ease the pain.

    • 4

Place a couple drops of olive oil in the ear to ease the pain. You can also purchase over-the-counter drops intended for earaches. However, do not do this if the ear has ruptured.

    • 5

Add a clove of garlic to a tsp. of sesame oil. Heat it until it becomes slightly warm. While laying on your side, carefully place four drops of this oil into your ear. Lie down for 10 minutes to allow the oil to work.

See your doctor if your earache does not improve in three days. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics, such as amoxicillin. You may also be given prescription-strength eardrops.
