Use a Cold Compress

Cold packs or a wet, cold wash cloth can reduce earache pain. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends applying a cold cloth or pack to the outer ear, gently applying pressure for 20 minutes. Applying cold pressure can reduce the burning or throbbing sensations in the ear.
Use Pain Medication

Acetaminophen or ibuprofen also reduces earache pain. Over-the-counter (OTC) brands of acetaminophen and ibuprofen include Tylenol and Advil. If the person with earache pain is a child, use children's acetaminophen or ibuprofen instead. Both medications temporarily reduce pain in the muscles and nerves.

Antibiotics reduce earache pain by killing the bacteria causing the pain, whereas decongestants reduce mucus buildup in the ear. Prescription pain medication is used to temporarily reduce the stabbing or burning sensations inside of the ear.
