Home Remedies to Soften Earwax

Earwax is a beneficial device designed to protect the workings of the inner ear. However, too much wax can be a bad thing. It can cause problems with hearing as well as earaches. Routine removal of earwax is recommended, but it can sometimes accumulate and harden inside the ear canal, making it difficult to remove. Home remedies to soften earwax have proven to be effective in these cases.
  1. Warm Oils

    • Various oils can be used inside the earn canal to soften earwax. These include olive, baby and mineral oils. For best results, the oil should be warmed, but be careful not to apply it when it's too hot. Use a dropper to insert 2 to 3 drops of the oil into the ear while the person is lying on their side. Allow the oil to sit in the ear for about 1 minute while it practically melts the earwax for easy removal. Have the person then turn to the opposite side so the oil and wax can drain from the ear.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • Peroxide is another effective home remedy to soften earwax. This is the main active ingredient in ear drops sold at the pharmacy. It contains antiseptic properties which will help soften and break up the earwax so that it can easily be removed. Pour 1/2 cap (using the cap of the bottle) of peroxide into the ear and allow it to sit. A bubbling sensation can be heard and felt in the ear. When this feeling dies down, drain the ear on a clean towel.

    Warm Water

    • Warm water can be used alone or with the other earwax softening remedies. It is sometimes more effective when used in conjunction with other liquids, but some avoid using anything other than water for fear of damaging their eardrum. This is especially true for those that have previously experienced damage to the inner or middle ear. If other methods are chosen, water should still be used to help flush out any wax left behind in the ear.
