1
Give your child something to chew or suck on when changing altitude. The chewing, especially, eases altitude earaches in an airplane. Bottles work for babies, and gum or hard candy works for slightly older children.

2
Wear a hat when it is colder than 50 degrees or when the wind blows and you plan on staying outside for an extended period of time. The change in temperature causes earaches. The warmer you can keep your ears, the less of a temperature change there will be when you head indoors.

3
Keep your sinuses clear by gently blowing your nose when it becomes runny. A runny nose is okay, but a stuffy nose can lead to ear infections. Use saline solution in your nose, if possible, to prevent mucus build-up and pressure.

4
Take a lactobacillus acidophilus supplement. This provides healthy bacteria and promotes a healthy immune system. This is the single most important way to prevent ear infections and earaches. The more your body can fight off harmful bacteria, the fewer occurrences of earache you will have.

Talk to your doctor or your child's doctor and see if he or she will prescribe a low dose of antibiotics. Some physicians do this during the most earache-prone months to prevent infection. Antibiotics, however, should be one of the last resorts since bacteria can become resistant to them.
