Cures for Meniere's Disease

Meniere's disease is an ear disorder characterized by problems with regulating the inner ear's fluid balance in the cochlea. Symptoms include episodic vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, pressure in the ear, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and disorientation. These symptoms make up a pattern which is called Classical Meniere's disease. The cause of Meniere's disease is not known at this time, and current research is focused on causes, treatments and possible cures.
  1. Research

    • An Internet survey conducted by the Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, revealed that people with green or dark brown eyes appear to be more susceptible to Meniere's disease (see Resources).

    Disability

    • Although Meniere's disease is controllable with therapy or treatments in the majority of cases, it can be chronic and lead to disability in some cases.

    Diet

    • Diuretics or water pills combined with a salt restricted diet can help reduce inner ear pressure.

    Medication

    • Antiemetic medications typically help with nausea and vomiting symptoms, and sedatives or tranquilizers can be prescribed for dizziness and vertigo.

    Ear Surgery

    • When symptoms are extreme and unresponsive to common treatments, ear surgery may be recommended.
