Causes for Continuous Ringing in the Ears

Continuous ringing in your ears is called tinnitus. Although not a disease, it can be a symptom of another, more serious condition. You may also hear sounds like buzzing, roaring, hissing or popping. The noise can cause problems with concentration and sleeping. If you have ringing or some other kind of continuous noise in your ears, consult your doctor for a diagnosis and treatment.

    • Fluid in your middle ear can cause ringing in your ears.

    Infection

    • Infections in your middle or inner ear can be the cause of tinnitus.

    Disease

    • Diseases such as Meniere's disease has symptoms of a constant ringing of the ears.

    Damage to the Nerve Endings

    • Damage to the microscopic nerve endings in the inner ear is a common cause of tinnitus.

    Aneurysm or Brain Tumor

    • In rare instances, it could be a signal of something more serious, such as an aneurysm or a brain tumor.

    Loud Noises

    • Long-term exposure to loud noises can lead to hearing loss as well as to ringing in your ears.
