How to Prevent Ears From Popping

For some the thought of flying is worrisome, not from the fear of being up in an airplane but from the earache you may experience in flight. If you encounter moderate to extreme discomfort and popping while flying because of the pressure buildup in your ears, you can do something about it.

Instructions

    • 1

Delay flying if you are experiencing any congestion or sinus infections. Flying will make the pressure worse.

    • 2

Use an over-the-counter nasal decongestant before the flight. This will decrease the size of any swollen nasal tissues.

    • 3

Insert earplugs when you take your seat on the airplane. Keep them in until the plane has reached cruising altitude and insert them again upon the first sign of descent. The plugs will slow the change in pressure and give your eardrums time to adjust.

    • 4

Perform the Valsalva maneuver. Close your mouth and pinch your nostrils while blowing gently. This is especially helpful during takeoff and landings.

    • 5

Bring gum and hard candy with you. Chewing and sucking will open the Eustachian tubes and alleviate pressure. You also can try yawning, swallowing and drinking water.

    • 6

Relieve the pressure for infants and toddlers with a pacifier or a bottle. Before flying, you can also consult their pediatrician about giving acetaminophen to manage the pain.
