How to Change a Bulb in an Otoscope

An otoscope, found in the offices of most medical professionals, is a device used to see into the inner part of the ear. An otoscope consists of a handle, a funnel-like object that is either discarded or cleaned after use, and a head that holds the bulb and magnifying lens. According to Family Practice Notebook, the bulb on an otoscope should be changed after 20 hours of usage. Changing that bulb will take just a few minutes to complete.

• Needle nose pliers
• Replacement bulb

  Remove the head of the otoscope. Most otoscopes will unscrew from the handle. Place the handle to the side.

  Remove the bulb from the underside of the head of the otoscope using forceps or needle nose pliers to hold and pull out the bulb.

  Insert the replacement bulb, the size of which will vary depending on the make and model of your otoscope. Be sure you have the proper bulb and push it into place as far as it will go. If the bulb is not fully inserted, the otoscope will not light.

  Reattach the handle to the otoscope and turn it on to make sure the bulb lights and is operating correctly.
