How to Muffle High Frequency Noise

High-frequency noises are often annoying and come from a wide range of areas. A TV turned on in the next room might emit a high-frequency sound through the walls, even if it is on mute. A sensitive ear can pick up the high-pitched sounds, which often result in an unpleasant ringing sound. Fortunately, there are ways to muffle the sounds to minimize or eliminate the high-frequency noise.

Put on noise canceling headsets. While many headsets are designed to block out background noises and allow listening to music, even wearing the headsets without music playing can muffle the high-frequency sounds.

Put musician's earplugs in your ears. According to Boston Children's Hospital, musician's earplugs are made for the individual ear and are designed to reduce sounds and even out frequencies. The purpose of the earplugs is to protect the inner ear from damage while allowing normal sounds to pass into the ear. It muffles and evens out the high-frequency sounds while letting spoken words, music or similar sounds into the ear.

Soundproof the rooms. Soundproofing muffles noise, especially in the case of high-frequency noise. Soundproofing is basically adding items to the room so sounds do not travel beyond the room. Putting heavy rubber mats and carpeting into a room to prevent sound from traveling downward or adding soundproofing runners to the doors are effective soundproofing methods. High-frequency noises are often hard to hear and result in a ringing sound when picked up by the human ear. Since the high-frequency sounds are the barely perceived sounds, adding in some soundproofing will help minimize or eliminate the high-pitched noise.
