What Is Otogenic Pain?

Otology is the science of the ear and ear disorders. The word otogenic means that the ear has formed or produced the condition or pain. There are a number of possible causes of otogenic pain as the ear can become inflamed or infected for many reasons. If you experience any kind of otogenic pain it is best to visit the doctor, who will be able to determine the cause of the problem and prescribe the right treatment for you.
  1. Earache

    • Earache often accompanies colds and flu.

The most common cause of otogenic pain would be a symptom of a cold or flu. Earache or a middle or inner ear infection could cause discomfort and mild pain.

    Labyrinthitis

    • The labyrinth is a system of channels in the inner ear.

Labyrinthitis can develop from a upper respiratory infection or a virus. Labyrinthitis causes ear pain, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and/or sweating. BBC Health UK describes it as; "similar to a severe bout of seasickness, but much worse." Symptoms may also include loss of hearing due to the breakdown in function of the labyrinth on one side of the head. Symptoms may last between one to three weeks, and the dizziness may continue for several months.

    Otitis externa

    • Otitis externa is often called swimmer's ear as increased amounts of water can damage ears' immunity.

Otitis externa is an inflammation originating in the outer ear canal. The cause is usually fungal or bacterial infection, and the condition is sometimes called "swimmer's ear" as getting the ears wet often can damage the defense systems of the ear. Symptoms include redness, itchiness, soreness and pain. There may also be discharge from the ear or more earwax is produced; this in turn can cause the ear to become blocked and the sufferer may experience some hearing loss.

    Treatments

    • Treatment varies depending on the condition.

Earache that is associated with colds and flu will usually go away by itself. If an infection occurs then your doctor may prescribe antibiotics. Labyrinthitis is treated with bed rest and medication in the early stages because of the vomiting medication may be administered rectally or via injection. Later on anti-seasickness tablets can be taken orally. In the case of otitis externa, a test can determine the cause of the infection; it involves taking a swab in the ear. Earwax may need to be removed by suction to clear the ear. This condition can usually be treated by ear drops or antibiotics.
