How long can ear ringing last for?

The duration of ear ringing, also known as tinnitus, can vary greatly among individuals. It can be classified into three categories based on its persistence:

1. Acute tinnitus: This is the most common type of tinnitus and usually lasts for less than three months.

2. Subacute tinnitus: Tinnitus that lasts between three and 12 months is categorized as subacute.

3. Chronic tinnitus: Tinnitus that persists for more than 12 months is chronic.

While acute tinnitus resolves spontaneously in many cases, chronic tinnitus can become a persistent condition. It's important to note that even within these categories, the perception of tinnitus can fluctuate in intensity and frequency over time. People with chronic tinnitus may experience periods of increased symptoms or symptom relief.

If you experience tinnitus, it's recommended to consult an audiologist or an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for an evaluation. They can investigate the underlying causes of tinnitus and recommend appropriate treatment options to manage the condition.
