Why do people build ear wax in your ears?

People do not intentionally "build" earwax in their ears. Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a naturally occurring substance that is produced by the glands in the ear canal. It is made up of a combination of oils, sweat, and dead skin cells. Earwax helps protect the ear canal by keeping it lubricated and free of dirt, dust, and other foreign objects. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that help prevent infections.

While earwax is usually beneficial, an excess amount can cause problems such as ear pain, hearing loss, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). This can occur if the earwax hardens or becomes impacted, which can block the ear canal. If you are experiencing any symptoms of earwax buildup, it is important to see a doctor to have your ears cleaned.
