How to Hold an Otoscope
Instructions

1
Decide which of the individual's ears you want to examine first. If you are going to examine the left ear first, place the otoscope in your left hand. If you are going to examine the right ear, place the otoscope in your right hand.
-
2
Slide your hand up close to the eyepiece. According to the University of Bristol, holding the otoscope near the bottom allows for more movement of the tip in the individual's ear, which can cause discomfort to the individual.
-
3
Place the earpiece in the individual's ear canal. Make sure you are using the biggest earpiece that will fit in the ear canal for the best view.
-
4
Hold the tip of the individual's ear with your free hand. Lift it backward and upward to get a better view.
-
5
Repeat with the second ear. Remember to switch the otoscope to the hand to properly hold it for the opposite ear.
