How to Unclog Earwax

Having a small amount of earwax in the outer ear canal is natural and healthy. According to the Mayo Clinic, "It protects your ear canal by trapping dirt and slowing the growth of bacteria." However, an overproduction of earwax will cause a blockage in the ear resulting in hearing loss and itchiness. An effective way to unclog it is to consult a physician or by safely removing the wax yourself using natural methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a few drops of mineral oil, baby oil or hydrogen peroxide in your ear twice a day for four to five days using an eyedropper. Carbamide peroxide, also known as Debrox or Murine Ear Drops, removes wax buildup in the canal and is sold in pharmacies.

    • 2

Put warm water or saline solution in a rubber-bulb syringe; squirt water into ear canal while tilting your head sideways, pulling your outer ear up and back.

    • 3

Drain the ear that you irrigated or flushed out by tilting head to the side, allowing the water to escape along with the built-up wax.

    • 4

Dry your outer ear completely but gently with a towel or a hand-held hairdryer.

    • 5

Consult your doctor or an otolaryngologist. These professionals will remove the earwax manually and safely using a small curved instrument known as a curette or perform a suction method while inspecting the ear.
