How to Clean a Mastoid

A mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure in which the ear canal is enlarged to include the mastoid space. Conditions that can result in your doctor performing a mastoidectomy include a diseased or damaged area on mastoid bone, chronic ear infections or drainage, or the removal of a tumor or cholesteatoma. When a mastoidectomy is performed, a mastoid bowl is created. This mastoid bowl will require periodic cleaning by your doctor to remove debris buildup and infection.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your doctor or surgeon ahead of time to explain to you how to take care of the mastoid bowl that will be created when you have your mastoidectomy. Ask the doctor for literature regarding after-care as well, in case you can't remember the instructions.

    • 2

Leave the cotton balls in your ears after your surgery for as long as the doctor recommends. This will protect the mastoid bowl from dirt and debris.

    • 3

Wait until your doctor gives you permission to wash your hair. If your doctor recommends it, put cotton balls with petroleum jelly in your ears when you shower to protect the mastoid bowl and keep it dry.

    • 4

Keep the bandage on or around your ear clean and dry.

    • 5

Keep all your follow-up ear-cleaning appointments with your doctor. To thoroughly clean the mastoid bowl, the doctor will have to surgically enlarge the meatus of your ear.

    • 6

Use a suction bulb to irrigate your ear following surgical cleanings, as per your doctor's instructions. Diluted vinegar works well, unless your doctor recommends you use a different antifungal agent.
