Old-Time Remedies for Ear Pressure
-
Hydrogen Peroxide
-
Hydrogen peroxide can be bought at any drug store or supermarket. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective product for removing ear wax, which can cause painful ear pressure. Use a dropper or the cap to drop enough hydrogen peroxide in your ear to fill the canal. You will feel tingling and bubbling in the ear. Let sit for a few minutes, then flush the ear out with warm water.
Warmth
-
Sometimes heat can help soften ear wax or ease the pain of ear pressure. Use a warm water bottle or warm bag of salt and hold it against the ear.
Valsalva's Maneuver
-
One traditional technique for ear pressure is called Valsalva's Maneuver. This maneuver can open the Eustachian tubes and provide relief. Take in a deep breath and close the mouth. While pinching the nose shut, blow the nose very cautiously. Do not blow the nose too hard as this could cause damage to the ear drum.
Yawning or Chewing
-
Many people chew gum when they get on a plane as a precaution. In a pinch, or while traveling, yawning or chewing gum can help clear out ear pressure. The chewing can help contract muscles and open up the Eustachian tube.
