How to Clean a Digital Hearing Aid
Many times a thorough cleaning of your hearing aid is all that's needed to restore the hearing aid and your hearing. You need to check all the parts responsible for channeling the sound into and out of the hearing aid. This includes tubing, earmold openings, microphone openings, speaker openings, domes, wax traps and wax guards.Things You'll Need
- Clean cloth or tissue paper
- Cleaning brush supplied with your hearing aid
- Cotton swab
- Canister of pressurized air

1
Wipe clean the surface of your hearing aids and any attachments with a clean dry cloth or tissue paper. Do not use tissue paper or paper towel that has been treated with a disinfectant or aloe; these additives may damage the plastic.
-
2
Inspect the openings of the hearing aid parts that go into your ear. Look for wax or dried skin that may block sound.
-
3
Brush across the earmold openings, speaker openings and domes to remove any wax or dried skin. Take care that you do not push the bristles into the openings.
-
4
Inspect the microphone inlets for wax, dirt or debris that may block sound from entering the hearing aids. Brush across the inlets to remove any blockage.

If your hearing aid has a tube that channels the sound to your ear, inspect the tube for wax and moisture. Carefully remove the tube from the hearing aid. Place the nozzle of the air canister into the tube and blow out the wax and moisture. Carefully re-install the tube onto the hearing aid.

If you have a custom earmold, wash it. Detach the tubing of the custom earmold from the hearing aid earhook. Wash the earmold and the tubing in warm water and mild soap. Blow out any water in the tubing and earmold with the air canister, then wipe it dry.

Open the battery compartment and remove the battery. Inspect the interior of the door for a rusty brown or greenish residue. Gently remove the residue with a cotton swab.
If the battery appears brown or green do not use it. Dispose of it properly and replace with a new one.
