Why Is the Ear So Prone to Infections?

Children and adults alike may develop the occasional ear infections. The ear pain, fullness and general malaise attributed to ear infections can be annoying. Luckily, the causes of ear infections, in most cases, are simple.
  1. Cause

    • The swelling and congestion associated with colds, allergies and sinus infections may trap fluid in the ear, causing ear infections. Short or misshaped eustachian tubes may also contribute to development of ear infections as well.

    Susceptibility

    • The eustachian tube, a tube that spans from the ear to the throat, makes the ear prone to ear infections. When fluid is unable to drain from the ear, microbes grow, eventually infecting the ear.

    Misconceptions

    • Ear infections aren't contagious. But, the colds that cause some ear infections are contagious.

    Treatment

    • Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, may relieve pain. Your physician may prescribe antibiotics like amoxicillin if pain persists.

    Prevention

    • To prevent ear infections, avoid smoking and limit exposure to secondhand smoke. Also, frequently wash your hands and surface areas that are touched.
