Clicky Ears Remedies
The symptom of "clicky" ears is often associated with a condition called tinnitus. Tinnitus is the presence of an annoying sound within the ears when no outside sound is present. Ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, whistling and hissing can all be associated with tinnitus. These sounds may be constant, or they may come and go. If you are bothered with persistent unusual sounds in your ear such as clicking, consult your physician.-
Types of Tinnitus
-
There are two different types of tinnitus, subjective and objective. Subjective tinnitus involves sounds only you can hear, while objective tinnitus can be heard by your doctor as well. There are various treatments available for both kinds of tinnitus that range from changing your living environment to prescription drugs. Clicking in the ear can be successfully treated working in conjunction with your doctor.
Considerations
-
If the clicking in your ears is caused by an existing medical condition, your doctor will approach treatment by addressing underlying conditions you may have or looking at prescriptions you take.
Blood Vessel Conditions
-
Blood vessel conditions can also lead to tinnitus or clicking; your doctor may prescribe medication to alleviate the blood vessel problem. Likewise, if you are currently taking prescription medicine, it may in fact be causing your problem. Your doctor can look at this and eliminate the medication if needed.
Environment
-
Change some things in your living environment to deal with clicking in the ears. The use of white noise machines while sleeping at night can help to block out annoying sounds in the ears. White noise machines are also available in pillow form, for an even more effective treatment while sleeping.
Hearing Aids and Antidepressants
-
Hearing aids are often recommended if you have hearing loss in conjunction with clicking. Masking devices are similar to hearing aids, and produce a continuous white, low-level noise to mask the annoying tinnitus symptoms.
Anti-depressant medications are sometimes recommended for those suffering with tinnitus. Consult your doctor to see if this is a good idea for your situation.
Lifestyle and Alternative Remedies
-
Lifestyle remedies can help to offset the effects of tinnitus. Reduce noise levels in your home whenever possible, set a fan on a low setting to produce a calming effect, manage stress levels, and avoid drinking alcohol as it can cause expansion of blood vessels in the ears. Acupuncture, hypnosis, ginkgo and zinc supplements may also help treat tinnitus, but there is no scientific evidence behind them.
