Boric Acid & Ear Infections
-
Applications
-
According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery, boric acid in solution can be used as an early stage treatment for swimmer’s ear, a common acute outer ear infection (otitis externa).
Therapeutic Properties
-
Boric acid is known to be antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal. Its acidic properties also seem to have a beneficial effect on restoring or maintaining the acidic environment of the ear, which promotes healing.
Preparation
-
Boric acid is mixed with alcohol or vinegar and distilled water to form a solution for use as drops. For animal use it is mixed with witch hazel and gentian blue.
Considerations
-
Boric acid should only be used for early stage acute outer ear infections. Never use boric acid or any other home remedy for middle or inner ear infections. If an ear infection does not clear up quickly, seek prompt medical attention
Warning
-
All types of ear infections can cause permanent hearing loss in humans and animals. Home remedies should not be substituted for diagnosis and treatment by a qualified health professional.
