Congestion Sinus Ear Pain
The primary cause of sinus congestion and ear pain is acute sinusitis. This condition occurs when the sinuses become swollen and inflamed. Acute sinusitis is usually not serious unless an infection develops.-
Effects
-
Acute sinusitis may cause facial swelling, headache and ear pain. Other symptoms may include fatigue, fever, nausea, thick, yellow or green nasal discharge, nasal congestion, sore throat, jaw or teeth pain and cough.
Time Frame
-
Acute sinusitis usually occurs following a cold, but it may also be caused by allergies, bacterial infections or fungal infections. If problems persist longer than eight weeks, chronic sinusitis may be diagnosed.
Considerations
-
Acute sinusitis usually runs its course and clears up on its own, unless infection sets in. To cope with acute sinusitis, rest, drinks lots of water and juice, apply warm wash cloths to the face and take hot showers or baths to promote mucus drainage.
Treatment
-
Treat congestion with saline nasal sprays, nasal corticosteroids and over-the-counter decongestants. Treat headaches, facial pain and ear pain with Motrin or Tylenol. Antibiotics may be needed if the suspected cause of the infection is bacterial in nature.
Warnings
-
Consult a doctor immediately if you experience a severe headache, severe facial swelling, vision problems, confusion, difficulty breathing and stiff neck.
