Vestibular Neuronitis Treatment

Vestibular neuronitis, or labyrinthitis, is a disorder that causes swelling and irritation of the inner ear. Patients with this condition may have difficulty maintaining their balance, and they may require lifestyle adjustments and treatment during a vestibular neuronitis infection.

  1. Symptoms

    • According to MedlinePlus, labyrinthitis may cause vertigo, dizziness and loss of hearing in one ear. Nausea, vomiting and ringing in the ears can develop in patients with this disorder.

    Infection Treatment

    • A vestibular neuronitis infection may require treatment with an antibiotic to fight infection-causing bacteria.

    Nausea and Vomiting Treatment

    • Individuals with nausea and vomiting due to vestibular neuronitis may be prescribed a drug such as compazine to control these symptoms.

    Dizziness Treatment

    • Dizziness that accompanies labyrinthitis may be treated with a prescribed medication, such as scopalamine or meclizine.

    Other Treatments

    • Some doctors may prescribe a corticosteroid such as prednisone to treat severe symptoms of labyrinthitis. Valium or other sedatives or hypnotic drugs may benefit patients with this disorder.

    Lifestyle

    • Patients should avoid sudden movements and may need help walking while they have a labyrinthitis infection. Driving, climbing and other hazardous activities should be avoided until a week after symptoms have disappeared.
