How to Calibrate a Tympanometer

Tympanometry is a method to determine the stiffness or compliance of the ear drum. The test is completed by the use of a tympanometer, which is inserted into the outer ear canal as air pressure is increased. The resulting tympanogram, which is a report created by the tympanometer, can determine if there are any issues such as infections or other ailments in the ear. The tympanometer should be calibrated often to make sure the readings are correct.

Turn on the tympanometer and select the calibration setting. Each manufacturer has a different process to reach the calibration setting. Follow the user's manual to reach the calibration setting.

    • 2

Insert the probe into the calibration tip that was provided with the machine or into the chambers provided on the machine. Machines with measurements of .5, 2.0 and 5.0 ml will have a hole or chamber for each setting to be calibrated. Follow the user manual to complete the calibration correctly.

Check to see if the probe tip and calibration chambers are clean if an error is received during the calibration. If the probe and chamber are clean, repeat the calibration process. Maintenance may be required if the machine will not calibrate correctly; call your service company for assistance.
