What are the affects of not eating?
Not eating, or fasting, for short periods of time (up to 24 hours) is generally safe and can even have some health benefits. However, not eating for longer periods of time can have significant negative effects on the body. Some of the affects of not eating for an extended period of time include:
* Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): When you don't eat, your body begins to use up its stored glycogen for energy. When glycogen stores are depleted, your blood sugar levels can drop. This can cause symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, confusion, and hunger.
* Ketosis: After several days of not eating, your body enters a state of ketosis. In ketosis, your body begins to break down fat for energy. This can produce ketones, which can build up in the blood and cause a condition called ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis can lead to nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and confusion.
* Muscle loss: When you don't eat, your body begins to break down muscle tissue for energy. This can lead to muscle weakness, fatigue, and decreased mobility.
* Organ damage: Prolonged fasting can damage the liver, kidneys, and heart.
* Death: In extreme cases, not eating can lead to death.
It is important to eat a healthy diet and to avoid prolonged fasting. If you are considering fasting for any reason, it is important to talk to your doctor first.
