How to Perform Colonic Irrigation

Colonic irrigation is a procedure by which large amounts of liquids are infused into a person's colon a few pints at a time. The practice is performed in an effort to wash out or cleanse the colon and to remove its contents, which some believe to be contaminated. The idea of contamination existing in the colon actually dates back to ancient Egyptian culture, which believed that all disease and death began in the colon. Today, proponents of colon irrigation (also called hydrotherapy or high colonic) believe in it as an alternative therapy that may cleanse the colon and restore it to optimum condition.

Instructions

Clean and sanitize a portable colon hydrotherapy unit before and after each use. Connect the machine's hot and cold water connectors to the hot and cold water faucet fixtures beneath a kitchen or bathroom sink. Turn off the water flow valve beneath your sink, disconnect the tubes running from the hot and cold fixtures to the faucets and connect your machine's hot and cold water tubes to the hot and cold fixtures beneath your sink.

Attach the disposable speculum to the end of the machine's hydrotherapy applicator and plug the machine in to an electrical outlet. Make yourself comfortable in a reclining position on a bed, couch or recliner.

    • 3

Insert the speculum into your rectum and turn the machine on. Turn on the machine's digital timer which will automatically time and begin counting down your colonic irrigation session so as to maintain a proper electrolyte balance. Monitor the water pressure inside your colon on the machine's pressure gage throughout your session. Locate the automatic water shut-off valve on the machine and be prepared to press it if you exceed the maximum amount of water pressure that your colon can safely handle at any point during your treatment. Refer to your machine's user manual, but in general, do not exceed 3 psi of water pressure at any point during your session. Switch between hot and cold water as desired by pressing the hot or cold switches on your machine.
