How to Show Kids How to Put in Contact Lenses

Vision changes in your child requiring the use of contacts can seem overwhelming. The best way to teach a child to put contacts in is by providing a variety of visual and auditory stimuli, such as videos, pictures and reading materials. With good hygiene and lots of practice, your child will adapt quickly and easily to putting in contacts, and before you know it, putting in contacts will become second nature.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule an appointment with your optometrist's office. The optometrist will be able to show your child how to put in contacts, and discuss good hygiene practices.

    • 2

Go to the manufacturer's website where the contacts lenses were made. The manufacturer will have step-by step instructions with illustrations on putting in and taking out contacts. You can print the instructions to keep on hand for your child.

    • 3

Search on well-known video websites for how-to videos, showing the correct way of inserting and removing contacts. Look for videos by vision care centers or optometrists. Videos show an actual person demonstrating the technique, which can be very helpful to a child.

    • 4

Talk with family or friends who wear contacts. A family or friend can show your child how to correctly insert and remove contacts.

    • 5

Encourage practice. Walk your child through the steps, then have the child go through the steps herself with your supervision, so you can address problem areas before they become habit.
