Can the Lense of Your Eye Become Detached?

The lens of your eye can become detached or dislocated when the small ligaments that hold it place become stretched or torn. The detachment is generally partial, and it can be corrected with surgery.
  1. Types

    • Lens detachment can come from hereditary disorders such as Marfan's syndrome or it can come from a blunt force injury, such as being hit in the eye with a ball.

    Symptoms

    • The most common symptom of a detached or dislocated lens is blurred vision. If the lens is only partially detached it may not cause any symptoms.

    Diagnosis

    • If the lens is significantly or completely detached an eye doctor will be usually be able to tell just by looking at the eye. If the detachment is minor the doctor will dilate your pupil in order to get a better look at the lens.

    Treatment

    • If the detachment and subsequent blurred vision is minor, your doctor will most likely just prescribe corrective lenses to clear up your vision. If the lens has become completely detached, it will have to be surgically replaced with a new lens.
