How to Insert Contact Lenses Safely

Learning how to put on contact lenses can be a difficult and frustrating process for a beginner. In some cases, it may even take a few weeks for someone to warm up to the idea of inserting something into their eye. With proper technique, gentle hands and practice, inserting contact lenses can be safe, easy and quick.

Instructions

    • 1

Balance the contact lens on your right index finger. Many contacts have a "123" imprinted on them to make sure it is not inside out. If that is not the case, make sure the edges of the lens do not open outward.

    • 2

Use your left hand to keep the upper lid open. Reach from overhead and gently hold your upper lid and lashes against your brow.

    • 3

Use your right middle finger to gently hold the lower lid away from the eye.

    • 4

Move your chin down toward your chest and continue to look toward the mirror. You should now have an upward glance.

    • 5

Place the contact lens between the lids of the eye. Make sure to do this gently and keep your eyes open and relaxed.

    • 6

Slide the lens gently towards the cornea when it is on the eye. Do not close your eye yet.

    • 7

Remove your finger keeping your eyes open. Gently let go of your lids and look down.

    • 8

Slowly close your eyes. You can also blink a few times if you'd like.

    • 9

      Repeat for the other eye.
