How to Store Extra Contact Lenses Away

Contact lenses, made of silicone, need to stay hydrated to keep working. Their delicacy requires you to treat them carefully and store them properly. Contact lenses do have expiration dates, but by storing them properly, you can prolong their shelf life and save them for later. It is best to store extra lenses in their original packages, but you can save a pair you have already worn.

  Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to ensure you don't transfer any bacteria to your lenses.

  Fill your contact lens case with the cleaning solution recommended to you by your eyecare provider. Make sure the case is clean and dry before you do this.

  Carefully remove your contact lens and put it in the palm of your hand. Add a few drops of cleaning solution and gently rub the contact lens back and forth in the fluid to get rid of any build up. Rinse the lens with more solution and put the lens in the allocated section of the case (i.e., L for left eye). Repeat with your other eye.

  Firmly shut the lid of the contact lens case and gently shake it to ensure the solution completely covers the lens.

  Store the contact lenses in a cool, dark area. Exposing them too much heat and sunlight can render them useless when you next need to use them. A dark drawer is perfect.
