Cornea Injuries

The cornea is the part of the eye that reflects images into our retina which, in turn, produces sight. Injuries to this part of the body can be particularly dangerous resulting in terrible repercussions.
  1. Exposure

    • Sun tanning can be dangerous if the proper eye wear is not worn. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set guidelines for tanning to help protect eyes from conditions such as cataracts and overall degeneration of sight due to ultraviolet light (UV) exposure. Wearing tanning goggles blocks 100 percent of UV exposure during a tanning session.

    Infection

    • Awkward fits of contact lenses, along with poor hygiene in regard to contact lenses, can lead to several complications. Infections and parasites introduced to the eye through lack of care can lead to corneal ulcers and mucus and irritation in the eyes. Taking care to sanitize and clean your contacts is the best way to prevent these infections.

    Damage

    • Dust particles are everywhere. Working in mills where particles are more prevalent is particularly dangerous to the cornea. Dust particles can scratch the cornea in high concentrations. Wearing goggles on the job or in a heavily dusty area can protect the eyes from corneal scratching and irritation.
