How do I Remove a Serial Number from the Lenses of Reading Glasses?

The numbers on the lenses of reading glasses usually indicate the power or strength of the lenses. Prescription lenses do not have these markings, but they are found on non-prescription lenses, usually reading glasses that are pre-made and can be bought in many stores. Sometimes markings on the lenses are there to show that the lenses are U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) approved safety lenses. It is possible to remove the power numbers from plastic lenses, but doing so will leave a mar on the lens. You should never remove the safety markings from a lens.

Instructions

  1. Marking Removal

    • 1

Wrap a small towel around the right lens, leaving the marking exposed. Fold the temples, the part of the frame that hold the glasses on the ears, towards each other so they are closed. You may have to adjust the towel to get the temples closed. This is done to prevent inadvertently scratching the viewing area of the lens. Lay the frame with the towel around the right lens onto a work surface or hold the frame firmly in your non-dominant hand.

    • 2

Rub the tip of the emery board in very small, short strokes across the numbers on the lens. Use very gentle pressure and work in tiny movements, being careful to only remove the numbers. Blow or wipe off any residue that forms to keep the lens and numbers clear as you work. Check often to see the progress and stop filing the lens once the numbers are removed.

Repeat the procedure with the left lens, using a towel to protect the viewing area and only leave the numbers exposed. Use gentle abrasion to buff off the numbers. Wash the lenses with soapy water and rinse with clear water. Dry the lenses with a soft, cloth towel. Do not use paper towels on plastic lenses.
