Is Epsom Salt Okay to Use on Swollen Eyes?

Epsom salt is the common name for magnesium sulfate. It has been used in folk remedies for many years. It can help alleviate stress and reduce swelling, and it can even be used on eyes if proper caution is taken.
  1. Baths

    • Epsom-salt baths are an easy way to replenish magnesium in the body. Bathing the entire body in Epsom salts can also alleviate conjunctivitis, or pink eye, by restoring this mineral through the skin. This improves your overall health, allowing your system to fight the eye infection, with the added bonus of easing back pain and exfoliating the skin.

    Eye Washes

    • Eye washes are another way to apply Epsom salts to treat conjunctivitis and swelling. Bathe the eye while it is closed, using a solution of hot water and Epsom salts. Use water as hot as you can stand without burning your hands or face. Let the compress cool if necessary. This can be done three or more times a day, as needed.

    Irritation

    • It is possible for Epsom salt to irritate the eyes, which is why eye baths must be done while the eye is closed. If any irritation occurs, apply the eye baths less frequently or stop them completely. When Epsom salt comes in direct contact with the eye, flush the eye with water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
