Why Do Blood Vessels Pop in Your Eye?

When vessels pop in your eyes it is called retinal hemorrhage. Vessels usually only pop when they are under extreme strain and pressure. Although popped vessels are not hazardous to your eyes, they do tend to look painful.
  1. Oxygen Shortage

    • A shortage of oxygen to the actual eye can cause enough pressure to cause blood vessels to pop. This is because the eye is being starved from the oxygen it needs to function property, resulting in ocular stress or strain.

    Hypertension

    • Hypertension, and similar conditions, can cause a strain and increased pressure to your eyes. This can cause the superficial blood vessels to burst.

    Childbirth

    • Childbirth is one of the most common reasons that someone may pop a blood vessel in their eye because of the pushing and straining that giving birth involves.

    Coughing and Vomiting

    • Surprisingly, it is possible to cough or vomit hard enough to make blood vessels pop. Dry coughs can cause enough strain to the eyes to pop blood vessels. Vomiting that results in a lack of oxygen or vomiting too hard can also cause too much strain to the eyes and pop blood vessels.
