Computer Usage & Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that results in a loss of side vision, and it can eventually lead to total blindness. It is generally related to eye pressure. There is no evidence available that links glaucoma to computer use.
  1. Computer Effect on the Eyes

    • Heavy computer use can cause eye problems. However, the eye problems associated with computer use are eye strain, eye irritation and temporary blurry vision according to the American Optometric Association. These problems can be troublesome, but they do not have any effect on glaucoma.

    Causes of Glaucoma

    • According to the National Eye Institute, glaucoma can be caused by structural or chemical anomalies in the eyeball. It can also be caused by an injury to the eyeball. None of the causes of glaucoma listed by the American Optometric Association or the National Eye Institute indicate computer use as a cause for glaucoma.

    Treatment for Glaucoma

    • A person with glaucoma must be under the care of an optometrist or ophthalmologist to ensure proper protection of vision. Fortunately, a person with glaucoma can freely use the computer without worrying that it will worsen his or her condition.
