Entropion Treatment

Entropion is an eye condition that results in your eyelid edges turning inwards. As a result, your lashes can rub the surface of your eyes, causing irritation and aggravation. According to Medline Plus, entropion occurs more often on the lower eyelid. Entropion is caused when you develop muscle spasms or muscle weakening within your eyes, which can then cause the eyelid to curl. Treatments can vary to help alleviate symptoms, though surgery is often necessary to correct the condition.
  1. Skin Tape

    • An ophthalmologist can administer skin tape to your eyelid. Skin tape is a type of transparent tape. When applied to your eyelid, it helps to prevent your eyelid from curling toward your eyes. Your ophthalmologist needs to demonstrate how to properly apply the tape so you don't harm your eyes. Usually, you apply the tape on your lower lashes as you gently pull it down and attach it to your upper cheek.

    Stitches

    • Your ophthalmologist can apply stitches to your eyelids to help prevent them from curling. He strategically places stitches in your eyelid to make the eyelid turn outwards. When he removes the stitches, scar tissue remains. The scar tissue enables your eyelids to stay in place. However, getting stitches in your eyelids isn't a permanent fix. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is possible for your eyelids to revert back to curling.

    Medications

    • Medications can help control flare ups of inflammation associated with entropion. You can administer lubricating drops and ointments to keep your cornea lubricated against the brushing of your lashes against your eye. You can also get injections (botulinum toxin) within your lower eyelid. Injections can turn your eyelids outward, but multiple injections are required to receive long-lasting effects.

    Surgery

    • In many instances, surgery may be a necessary treatment for entropion. Surgery may be considered in order to prevent ulcers from developing in your eye. Depending on the severity of your condition, your surgeon may remove some of your lower eyelid if your condition was the result of muscle weakness. If you have undergone previous stitching to your eyelid, he will graft skin to correct your condition.

    Entropion Complications

    • See an opthamologist if you develop problems.

Regardless of the treatments you receive for your condition, it's important to keep close tabs on any changes in your eyes. If your eyelashes consistently rub your eyes, your corneas can eventually break down. Corneal breakdown can lead to irreversible vision loss. It's important to see your ophthalmologist if you develop redness, pain, sensitivity to light or decreasing vision in your eyes.
