The Effect of Heating on the Human Eye
Heating during winter months often causes bothersome conditions on the surface of the human eye. Typically, there are no long term effects from heating, but you should be familiar with eye symptoms to help you manage any discomfort or vision changes.-
Dry Eye
-
Forced air heating units blow air throughout the home or office, and this may cause the surface of the eye to be dry and uncomfortable.
Blurred Vision
-
When the tear film on the surface of the eye is dry, vision may blur. Rapid blinking often helps, but the blurred vision will likely return since the heating environment remains the same.
Irritation
-
Heating may cause eye irritation and discomfort related to the dry surface of the eye. Eyes may feel as though an eyelash or other foreign body is in the eye, creating a gritty, sandy feeling.
Diagnosis
-
Changes in vision or eye irritation should be evaluated by an eye care professional. The eye doctor will examine the surface of the eye, and he may ask about heating and air conditioning in your home.
Treatment
-
If eyes are dry from heating, the eye doctor may recommend a humidifier to add moisture to the air. He may also recommend using artificial tears to keep eyes moist and comfortable.
