Erythromycin Ophthalmic Ointment Contraindications

Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, an antibiotic of the macrolide group, is available over the counter for the treatment of eye conditions in both people and animals. While side effects or contraindications are unusual, it is important to have the eye condition first diagnosed by a veterinarian before giving it to a cat or dog. It works only on bacterial infections in the eye. Follow the vet's dosage recommendations and continue giving it for the entire period of time prescribed, even if the infection has cleared. Failure to give the complete dosing cycle could cause recurrence of the infection. The same product is used for both human and animal patients.
  1. Hypersensitivity

    • Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment should not be given to any animals, or people, who have demonstrated a previous sensitivity to it. If given to a cat that responds in a hypersensitive manner, call the vet immediately.

    Fungal Eye Infections

    • An appropriate diagnosis of the eye condition is important because erythromycin ophthalmic ointment does not work on fungal infections. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. Using it to treat fungal infections is ineffective and contraindicated. A delay in the proper treatment of fungal infections could cause serious or permanent eye damage.

    Stinging, Blurred Vision

    • Some animals, and people, may experience stinging in the eye after application of the ointment. Blurred vision may occur. This is generally a temporary phenomena. Precautions may need to be taken if the animal cannot see so it does not hurt itself.
