Eye Socket Disease
Many people are aware of the many diseases of the eye, but not many people consider the conditions that involve the eye socket. Knowing about these conditions will make you aware of diseases that may affect eye health and vision.-
Graves' Disease
-
Graves' disease results from thyroid disease and causes eye conditions. The most common symptom of Graves' disease is proptosis, a condition where the eye appears to protrude from the eye socket.
Orbital Cellulitis
-
Orbital cellulitis occurs when tissue around the eye socket and around the eye becomes inflamed and infected. This may cause pain, changes in vision, redness or limited movement of the eye.
Orbital Tumors
-
Tumors can form in the tissues around the eye, and this may cause pain and double or blurred vision. Some tumors may go unnoticed in the eye socket; others may cause the eye to protrude.
Diagnosis
-
Any change in the look or shape of the eye or surrounding tissues should be evaluated by an eye doctor. He may recommend a CT scan to determine the cause of any changes to the eye socket or eye.
Treatment
-
The doctor will prescribe antibiotics for cellulitis. Tumors and other eye socket diseases are frequently evaluated based on location and extent of damage, though surgery is often a consideration.
